What is a flue?

Flue systems can be broken down into the following categories:

• Connecting flue pipes
  • These are the pipes which normally go from the stove to another flue way such as a masonry chimney, flexible liner, or twin wall flue system. They are commonly coated to the same colour as your stove
• Flexible flue systems
  • These flues are generally made from stainless steel and sometimes are mistaken for twin wall flue systems. Although these are commonly made from several layers of stainless steel. They should not be confused with the rigid insulated type used to form a chimney. They are sold by the meter and can be cut to length if required.
• Twin wall insulated flue systems
  • Made from two layers of stainless steel sandwiching a layer of insulation these pipes form, the basis of a chimney system. They are normally used in places where there is no chimney breast. These pipes cannot be cut to length and normally come in 1m and 0.5m lengths. A range of elbows and adjustable lengths are available to create your chimney.

Flexible stainless steel liners are recommended with wood burning stoves due to the temperature that the stove runs at. Flexible flue liners sometimes known as twin wall liners can be mixed up with twin wall insulated flue systems. Twin wall insulated flues are generally used to create a chimney where a wood burner is to be fitted in a property without a masonry chimney stack.
